"Free" ordering systems usually make money somewhere: an order cap, a percentage of each order, or upsells. GloriaFood, the best-known free system, is closing on 30 April 2027.
Chefzi is honest about it: A$17 or A$36 a month excluding GST, unlimited orders, no commission and no setup fee. Read what "free" really costs.
Free order form or ordering system?
You can take orders for free with a general form builder such as Google Forms. Customers type their order, and you read the responses. It works for a short menu and low volume. It falls short as orders grow:
- No payment, so you chase money or take it at pickup.
- No item options or menu prices, so totals are worked out by hand.
- No order alerts, ready times or delivery zones.
- No pause button when the kitchen is busy.
A form is a fine test. Once you take orders every day, an ordering system saves more time than it costs.
The real cost of "free"
GloriaFood proved that free ordering works, and its closure shows the risk: a free product can be switched off. Free plans usually make money elsewhere: a per-order fee, paid add-ons for card payments or delivery, a fee charged to the customer, or limits that push you to upgrade. Before choosing one, add up what you'd pay in a normal month at your real order volume.
Questions to ask about any free plan
- Are card payments included, or a paid add-on?
- Is there a fee per order, to you or to the customer?
- Can I set delivery zones by suburb?
- Can I export my customers if I leave?

Where "free" systems make their money
- Order or product caps that push you to a paid plan once you're busy.
- A higher card rate than you'd pay Stripe directly (for example 2.2% against Stripe's 1.65% + A$0.30 for domestic cards).
- Per-order platform fees, sometimes passed on to the diner.
- Paid add-ons for QR ordering, a custom domain or branded apps.

Is there a truly free online ordering system in Australia?
Several platforms advertise free online ordering in Australia. "Free" usually means one of three things:
- A free plan with limits, such as an order cap or missing features like delivery.
- No monthly fee but a per-order or percentage fee. A 2% fee on A$20,000 a month is A$400.
- No software fee but card processing, which every online card payment carries.
GloriaFood was the best-known free option, and it is closing on 30 April 2027. That's the other cost of free: if a product isn't paying its way, it can be switched off.
Chefzi charges a flat monthly fee with unlimited orders and 0% commission, so the cost doesn't grow with your sales. See pricing. For every published Uber Eats and DoorDash rate with sources, see our Australian delivery-app commission report. To put your own sales in, use the commission calculator.
What commission costs on an illustrative A$10,000 month
| A$10,000 a month in app orders for your venue | Commission |
|---|---|
| Uber Eats, they deliver (30%) | A$3,000 |
| DoorDash, pickup (15%) | A$1,500 |
| Chefzi (0%) | A$0 plus a flat monthly fee |
Published Australian rates from the Uber Eats and DoorDash merchant pricing pages, checked 27 October 2026. Excludes GST and card processing. Your own agreement may differ.
