GST on takeaway food in Australia: a guide for online orders
Updated 2026-10-27
This is general information, not tax advice. Check the ATO website or ask your accountant about your business.
Prices include GST
Australian consumer law expects the total price to be shown. Your online menu prices should include GST, just like your counter menu.
Which food is taxable
GST is 10%. Hot takeaway food, meals and food eaten on the premises are generally taxable. Some basic cold food, such as plain bread or fresh fruit, can be GST-free, while soft drinks and confectionery are taxable. If you sell a mix, set the right GST status on each item so your reports are correct.
Receipts and tax invoices
Customers can ask for a tax invoice. For sales over A$82.50 including GST, a GST-registered business must give one on request, with your ABN. Make sure your ordering system's receipts show your business name and ABN.
App commission and GST
Delivery app commission is a service fee to you, and GST is generally charged on it. Keep the apps' monthly statements for your BAS. App payouts are after commission, so reconcile sales at the full price, not the payout. Our commission report lists each app's published Australian rate, with links.
Direct orders make BAS easier
When orders come through your own page, the full sale and the card fee are clear and in one place. Export daily totals from Chefzi and give them to your bookkeeper.
GST also applies to delivery-app commission, which the delivery commission calculator helps you estimate. A 0% commission ordering page removes that line entirely. Chefzi's prices (A$17 or A$36 a month) are shown ex GST.
